Salt that adds taste to our life

From past few days, salt pan workrs of little run of Kutch, (Agariyas0 as they are locally known as, are living under a threat of displacement. Many amogst them have got notices from forest department of th state, saying that little run of Kutch has been declared as sanctuary and thus any salt making is not permissible any more.
the salt pan workers, belongs to msocially marginalsed sections of the society and migrates to little run of kutch for 8 months to toin in hot sun and shievering cold to produce salt. Traditionally for more than 600 years they are producing salt. the price what is get is not mor than 8 to 9 paisa per kg.!!
Government esepcilly health, education, labour and industry department for past few yrs has worked proactively to ensure mobile health services, eduation and safety kits for these workers. In corodination with community organisations, ngos and forum called agariya heet rakshak manch government has designed special shchemes by ocnsidering needs of these groups in context of their migration fo more than 8 moths.
Little run of kutch is muddy desert, which turns into water body in monsoon and in september as water recedes, slatt pan workers produce salt by extracting brine from the ground.
TRhe salt produced here is special feature as they form crystal called as "Gangdo". The mariene salt (that proiduced with sea water) has small granules type. For years, Salt pan workers have some friends in this muddy flat run of mor ethan 4500 sq. kms. The first one is wild ass, who also resides in little run of Kutch. thir other friends are bycycle, the only mode fo transport, the peageon and their dog !!!
But now law projects salt pan workers as enemy of wild ass and are asked to leave run. The number of wild ass for last few years has been constantly increasing!! Wild ass and Salt pan workers can stay together! Many a times, salt pan workers protect wild asses from pouchers! We need to understand the importance of their co-existance and recognise it! or else we are going to loose Salt pan workers as well as Wild asses.
